Northern and Rich Mountain College both came into the Region 2 conference game undefeated in the conference and tied for the top spot. The game looked to live up to its billing as a match up of top teams with both teams getting good possession. The Mavs seemed to have better chances, but lightning would stall their momentum delaying the game for thirty minutes, twenty-five minutes into the first half. During the break the wind picked up from a light breeze to a very strong wind out of the north. The Mavericks were playing into the wind for the final twenty minutes. Despite going into the wind the Mavs did outshoot the Bucks seven to three. However none of the shots found the net.
The Mavericks started the second half strong picking up a goal just five minutes into the second half. Damorney Hutchinson dribbled into the penalty box and laid the ball off to Jesus Aleman. Aleman ripped a shot past the Bucks goalkeeper to put the Mavericks up 1-0. Northern would keep the pressure up for the remainder of the second half, and extended the lead half way through the second half. Marcovich Brown sent a perfect free kick into the box, which Jesus Aleman headed home to put the Mavs up 2-0. Nine minutes later Damorney Hutchinson scored a goal to put the game out of reach. Hutchinson took a pass from Marcovich Brown. Cut the ball past a defender and the goalkeeper and shot into the corner of the goal.
The Mavs outshot the Bucks nineteen to three on the day. Rich Mountain's goalkeeper was credited with nine saves while Northern goalkeeper, Spencer Braswell, only had to stop one shot.
"This was a good game between two good teams," said coach Michael DuRoy. "It was a great game to watch until the wind picked up. I don't think the wind helped us as much as it hurt Rich Mountain. It was very difficult to play into that wind. Despite that I felt like we were the better team today. We are playing pretty well right now. We need to keep getting better, because there are some really good teams in our conference. Jesus Aleman had a great game with two goals. Our back line of Kareem Williams, Kai Lewis, Rahmon Oduborisa, Eventz Malaska, and Nathan Asiedu played really well."
The 3-0 Mavs will be back in action Sunday at Murray State College. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
