MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -- Rose State upset the Mavs in Midwest City Sunday afternoon 2-1 in overtime.
The Mavericks started strong controlling the early possession, and would continue to dominate the ball for the majority of the game. Northern created several good chances throughout the first half, but many of their shots were deflected out for corners. The Mavs would take thirteen corner kicks on the day.
Northern finally broke through when Kareem Williams chested down a ball in the box to Damorney Hutchinson. Hutchinson smashed the ball by the Rose State goalkeeper to put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the first half. Later it looked like the Mavs would go up by two goals when Jesus Aleman's free kicked wrapped around the wall and into the corner of the goal, but the Rose State goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the Raiders within scoring distance.
Rose State scored midway through the second half on a free kick. The Raiders chipped the ball over the wall and ran on to the ball to tap it in around Spencer Braswell. Later the Mavs seemed to go up again after scoring a free kick, but the referee had not restarted play and the goal was disallowed.
The Raiders would end the game midway through the first overtime with a penalty kick goal. The Mavs failed to clear a corner kick, and the ball was deflected up into the hand of a Maverick defender. The referee awarded Rose State with a penalty kick, which they converted for the win.
"I was extremely disappointed in the loss, but I give credit to Rose State," said coach Michael Duroy. "They have a good team. We just didn't make enough plays when we could have to win the game. We had several chances to put the game away in the first half and we didn't convert them. Things have come very easy for this team and today we were challenged. At times we didn't respond very well. I know I could have done a better job of organizing us. I take full responsibility for the loss. We will learn from the loss and get better. We are still in first place in the conference with the second round of games starting Friday. It's going to be exciting to see who can win the conference."
