8th Ranked Men's Soccer Upset in Region Semi-Final

ENID, Oklahoma -- The Mavericks picked the wrong time to be just a little bit off and were upset by Rich Mountain College 4-1 in the Region 2 Semi-Final in Enid.   The Mavs had beaten Rich Mountain in each of the two previous game this season.

Northern started strong, but unlike most games this season the 8th ranked Mavs could not get an early goal.  In fact neither team could score until Rich Mountain scored with just four minutes left to play in the first half.

The Mavs had several chances to get the equalizer, but each time the Rich Mountain goalkeeper came up with huge saves to keep the Bucks ahead.  Midway through the second half the Mavs gave up another goal on a counter attack.  Northern lost their composure for a six minute stretch and Rich Mountain capitalized with two more goals.  After the bad stretch the Mavs were able to create several more chances, but only Jesus Aleman was able to find the net to make the final score 4-1.

Northern outshot the Rich Mountain twenty-five to ten for the game.  Jesus Aleman had more shots on goal by himself than Rich Mountain had total shots for the game.  The Mavs also produced nine corners on the day.  The 9-2 Mavs will now wait to see if they are selected for one of the four at-large births to the NJCAA National Tournament.

"This was a tough loss," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "In some ways we played up to our standard and in others we weren't even close.  Their goalkeeper deserves a lot of credit.  He made some miraculous saves.  He was definitely the difference in the game.  We gave up as many goals today as we had given up in all of our games combined.  The second goal stunned us, and we lost our composure.  I need to do a better job of settling everyone down.  The playoffs are just different.  Every mistake is magnified times ten.  We need to find a way to perform better in the playoffs and that is 100% on me."  ," he

"Now we will wait on some other results across the country and see if we get an at-large bid to the national tournament," he said.  "Either way I'm really happy for our guys.  They had an amazing year.  We were conference champions, ranked eighth in the nation, and had five first team All Region players.  That is impressive."
