Seminole Hands Women's Soccer First Loss

SEMINOLE, Oklahoma -- Seminole scored a goal seven minutes into the game and were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead for the remaining eighty-three minutes to hand the Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks' women's soccer their first loss of the season.

The loss dropped the Mavs to 4-1 on the season.

The goal came off a corner kick as Mavs goalkeeper, Larissa Haagsma, got a hand to the ball but was unable to keep it from going in the top corner of the goal.  Moments later Seminole was awarded a penalty kick after a Mavericks foul in the box.  Haagsma made a diving save to keep the score 1-0.

Northern had a great chance midway through the first half on a Milica Bulatovic shot, but the Trojan goalkeeper deflected the ball just wide of the post.  The Mavs would get another good chance on a Sofie Joergensen shot, but the Seminole goalkeeper sat on the ball to keep it from crossing the line.  Later Bulatovic had another shot beat the keeper that looked like it was going to roll in while being chased by two Seminole defenders, but once again the ball rolled wide of the post.

Late in the half Janet Moreno broke in behind the Seminole defense and was fouled by the Trojans goalkeeper just outside the box.  The goalkeeper received a red card forcing the Trojans to play a player short for the remainder of the game.

Despite being a player up for the second half the Mavs were unable to create much offense in the second half, and the game would end with Seminole taking the 1-0 win.

"First I would like to congratulate Seminole coach, Daniel Hill." said coach Michael DuRoy. "He is a former player of mine, and I couldn't be more proud of him.  He has done an amazing job there.  I've watched how hard he has worked and he deserves all the success he is getting."

"I thought our girls played extremely hard and competed for the full ninety.  I'm so proud of the effort they gave.  We always say that we want the players to play as hard as they can and we will live with the result.  Today I thought they did that.  We know we are undermanned right now due to injuries and all the craziness of the year.  We are playing two goalkeepers as field players right now.  One of which, Jordan Webster, is starting.  She played the entire game and did a great job.  We kept it to a one goal game and anytime you can do that you are one kick of the ball away from a tie," DuRoy added.

"The future is bright for this program," he said.  "We are learning to compete this year.  It may or may not produce a championship this spring, but it will certainly help us in the fall when our outstanding recruiting class arrives."
