The Mavs dropped their second game in a row on a cold, rainy afternoon in Tonkawa 2-1 to NEO.
NEO got a late goal in the first half. The Norsemen found the net with just over a minute left in the first half.
The Mavericks started the second half strong and dominated the possession for most of the second half. Milica Bulatovic tied the game midway through the second half after receiving a pass from Nicole Anderson. It looked like the Mavs would take the lead several times, but the NEO goalkeeper made a few outstanding saves and the Mavs missed two open goals.
NEO took the lead back against the run of play launching a counter after a Maverick turnover led to a breakaway resulting in the winning goal.
"Are we the team that started 4-0 and played a one goal game with the sixth ranked team in the nation or the team that just lost to NEO?" "The truth is we are both," said coach Michael DuRoy. We are not a great team. We are a team that can be good if we play with great effort. Today we didn't always do that. The girls are tired and I get it. We have played four games in a week, and are coming off a really tough game where we had to give maximum effort. The schedule is what it is and its not going to change. We have to find a way to deal with it."
"Despite it not being our best effort we still could have won the game," he added. "We missed some chances today that we normally finish, and I give credit to the NEO goalkeeper for making some nice saves. Sometimes in soccer its just not your day, and today was one of those days. I'm looking forward to the next game. I know the team will respond."
The Mavs (4-2) travel to Rose State for games in Midwest City at 1 p.m.
