Northern didn't have many chances against Seminole State, but made the few that they did have stand in a 1-0 victory over the Trojans Friday afternoon in Tonkawa.
The nations leading goal scorer, Milica Bulatovic, stole the ball from a Seminole defender and shot the ball past the diving goalkeeper to put the Mavs up 1-0 in the fourth minute of the game. That would be all of the offense the Mavericks would need as the team defended hard and Larissa Haagsma made some huge saves to keep the shut out.
"We had one chance to win this game," said coach Michael DuRoy. "That was to score on the counter and defend for our lives. The girls did that. Milica scored a nice goal. She is the best player in the country, and she proves it every game. After the goal we had to defend for the rest of the game. What the girls did today is extremely hard. They worked their socks off. Seminole is very good. To not allow them to score is quite an accomplishment."
"I was happy for Larissa," he added. "She played a great game."
"Our crowd was very vocal today," DuRoy said. "They certainly played a role in the win. We felt like Seminole talked a little too much the last time we played them so they got some payback today. Daniel (Hill) (Seminole coach) is a Mav and I hate to see things like that, but if teams are going to talk they need to be ready to receive it back. Daniel and I talked about it after the game, and I think both teams are ready to move past it. I know we are."
The Mavs are now 8-3 on the year, they travel to NEO for another conference game Sunday at 2 p.m.
